Buxton Hitmen 51 Linlithgow Lightning 39

(Conference League Cup ~ July 18th)

With their big win in the away leg, Buxton faced the formality of concluding the tie on their own track. The visitors included Edinburgh's Jamie Birkinshaw and Berwick's Wesley Waite to strengthen their team while Buxton finally tracked their top 7 riders at home for the first time.
The Lightning got off to a winning start as Jon Swales and Wesley Waite gated with Waite tasking Mark Steel wide. This allowed Neil Painter to slip through into 2nd and Steel then passed Waite and his skipper for a drawn heat. Buxton's in-form reserves Lee Smethills and James Mann comfortably took heat 2 and Birkinshaw showed Burnett and Collins a clean pair of heals in the third.
The Hitmen went another 4 points ahead and sealed the tie in Heat 4 as Adam Allott, showing some improvement after a few outings with Sheffield, and Smethills took a 5-1 but this was reversed as the Lightning top 2 Jon Swales and Birkinshaw beat Burnett and Collins. Their joy was short lived however as first Painter and Steel, then Mann and Smethills took maximum wins, the latter in an incident packed race. First Allott ran the tapes and was replaced by Smethills and then Smethills led the re-run but was brought down as Birkinshaw clipped his back wheel and fell with the Linlithgow rider excluded.
Jon Swales won Heat 8 from Smethills and Steel before a great race in the next which saw the Lightning on a 4-2 but that changed as first Collins passed Waite and then Burnett found a way passed race leader Jon Swales. A determined ride by Steel in the 10th saw him head home Birkinshaw but Painter came in third complaining about the dusty conditions. Another win by Jon Swales in the next was backed up by Birkinshaw in the following Heat but on both occasions the Buxton boys were 2nd and 3rd. After the track watering, Allott and Painter shot into the lead of Heat 13 but the Hitmen skipper was passed by Jon Swales but Allott was too far in front to be troubled.
Birkinshaw led the penultimate race at the first attempt but it was stopped after Mann fell while 2nd with Collins laying his bike down in avoiding him. Collins was forced to use Paul Burnett's bike for the re-run but could only follow Birkinshaw home. The final heat was also stopped, this time Steel fell on the fourth turn with Burnett somehow managing to miss him. These last 2 heats brought some respectability to the scores but 34 of the Lightnings points came from two riders. This was the 3rd match between these teams in recent weeks and the Lightning are getting closer but the Buxton team continue to roll on.
