Buxton Hitmen 51 Mildenhall Fen Tigers 37
(Conference League ~ August 29th)
Mildenhall came into the match with high hopes after winning at Linlithgow the previous evening and knowing they only lost by 5 points on their last visit. The Hitmen retained the same seven as last week with the injured Jamie Young deputising for the more injured James Mann. Lee Smethills was also due to make the first defence of his Bronze Helmet.

Heat 1 ~ Painter, Young, Sweet, Hedge (Ret) (5-1) [5-1]
Hedge didn't get off the start and pulled up on the 2nd turn. Painter led and Young joined his captain by passing Sweet on the 3rd turn.
Heat 2 ~ Evans, Camden, Smethills, Steel (1-5) [6-6]
Evans, off gate 1, pushed Smethills wide on the 1st turn and Camden cut back under the Hitman to level the scores.
Heat 3 ~ Burnett, Collins Knowles (Ex-Fell) Duffil (Ex-Fell) (5-0) [11-6]
Duffil was excluded after falling on the 2nd turn of lap 2 with Knowles leading. In the re-run Burnett led but locked slightly on the 3rd turn and Knowles appeared to clip his back wheel and fell.
Heat 4 ~ Allott, Camden, Colvin, Steel (Fell) (3-3) [14-9]
Allott led all the way. Steel fell on the 1st turn of the last lap while in an easy 3rd place.
Heat 5 ~ Sweet, Hedge, Burnett, (res)Smethills Collins (Ex-Tapes) (1-5) [15-14]
Mildenhall closed to within a point as Sweet and Hedge gated over the home pair.
Heat 6 ~ Young, Painter, Colvin, Evans (F.rem) (5-1) [20-15]
In a repeat of the start of Heat 2, Young pushed Colvin out and Painter moved under him for 2nd. Evans fell on the 1st turn but remounted.
Heat 7 ~ Allott, Knowles, Smethills, Duffil (4-2) [24-17]
Allott was away and gone. Smethills held 2nd but Knowles passed him around the outside on turn 4 of the lap 3.
Heat 8 ~ Camden, Young, Hedge, Steel (Ex-Dangerous Riding) (2-4) [26-21]
The Fen Tigers closed the gap with a 4-2 after Steel was excluded for knocking Camden off as he charged under him on the 3rd turn.
Heat 9 ~ Burnett, Colvin, Collins, Evans (4-2) [30-23]
In a fantastic move, Burnett went around both Mildenhall riders on the 4th turn of lap 1, Collins passed Evans the same way a lap later but could quite pass Colvin for 2nd.
Heat 10 ~ (t/s)Hedge, Knowles, Young, Painter (1-5) [31-28]
The gap was closed to 3 points as Hedge led from the start and was joined by Knowles who passed Young on the outside of turn 4 on the 2nd lap as Young looked to bring Painter through.
Heat 11 ~ Allott, Hedge, Smethills, Sweet (4-2) [35-30]
Allott fought Hedge off on the first turn to win. Sweet trailed in a poor last.
Heat 12 ~ (res)Smethills, Knowles, Collins, Evans (4-2) [39-32]
Buxton stretched the lead to 7 as Smethills won but Knowles and Collins had an almighty battle for 4 laps with the ex-Hitman coming out on top - just.
Heat 13 ~ Allott, (t/s)Knowles, Colvin, Painter (Ex-Fell) (3-3) [42-35]
Again Allott was away but Painter, in 2nd, spun round on the 1st turn and fell. Somehow both Mildenhall riders missed him but only by luck that he fell in between them. Allott made it 4 out of 4 in the re-run.
Heat 14 ~ Smethills, Burnett Duffil (Ex-Fell) Camden (Ex-Not under power) (5-0) [47-35]
The Buxton pair gated and were out in front. Duffil went wide on the 2nd bend of lap 2, clipped the fence and fell. At the same time, Camden was rolling to a halt on the centre green and both were excluded.
Heat 15 ~ Allott, Knowles, Burnett, Hedge (Fell) 94-2) [51-37]
Allott completed a fine maximum with another good start. Hedge fell on the 2nd bend while in 3rd place.
Bronze Helmet ~ Smethills (Holder) Beat Knowles (Challenger)
It hadn't been a good day for Smethills but he made no mistake by beating Knowles to the first turn and rode 4 smooth laps to retain the trophy.
